The Newfoundland and Labrador Statistics Agency would like to acknowledge contributions from a number of provincial and national agencies. Rural Secretariat

The Rural Secretariat's Mandate:

Promote the well-being of Rural Newfoundland and Labrador through a comprehensive and coordinated approach aimed at integrating economic, social, and cultural aspects of rural and regional development.

Act as the focal point for government to work with local and regional partners to build strong and dynamic regions and communities.

Ensure that rural concerns are considered throughout the provincial government and promoted at the federal level.

Carry out research and analysis of economic and social issues affecting rural Newfoundland and Labrador. Help communities and regions identify and take advantage of growth opportunities.

Promote awareness of provincial and federal programs and services regarding rural communities.





Memorial University of Newfoundland

Memorial University of Newfoundland is Atlantic Canada's premiere comprehensive university and one of the region's most important research facilities.

Memorial is committed to excellence in teaching, research, and scholarship, and service to the general public.





Provincial Libraries

Newfoundland & Labrador Public Libraries ensure that library materials, free access to the Internet and programs are available to meet the needs of the Province’s people.

This is provided through a network of 96 public libraries in communities large and small throughout the Province. These libraries are organized into four divisions – Western Newfoundland & Labrador Division, Central Division, Eastern Division and Provincial Resource Division (St John’s Public Libraries). Provincial Administration’s headquarters are located in Stephenville, NL.

The Provincial Information and Library Resources Board is responsible for all public library services in Newfoundland and Labrador under the Public Libraries Act.





Department of Human Resources, Labour and Employment (HRLE)

With about 550 staff members, Human Resources, Labour and Employment is one of the largest departments in the Newfoundland and Labrador Government.

The department was formed in 2004 following government's decision to move Youth Services and Immigration into the former department of Human Resources and Employment. The department also became responsible for the newly created Labour Relations Agency.

Bringing together income support, employment support, youth services, labour market development and immigration provides greater opportunities to integrate an array of programs and services. These are all designed to help low-income people and families build greater social and economic independence.





Department of Innovation, Trade and Rural Development (INTRD)

The mandate of the Department is to foster and promote economic development by encouraging investment, promoting strategic opportunities, and maximizing business and employment growth in all regions of the province.

In partnership with individuals, communities, businesses and other levels of government, the Department is responsible for creating and maintaining a competitive economic environment that encourages and supports private sector business growth and new long term sustainable employment opportunities for Newfoundlanders and Labradorians.





The Harris Centre for Innovation

The Harris Centre co-ordinates and facilitates Memorial University’s educational, research and outreach activities in the areas of regional policy and development. The Centre works with all faculties and departments within the University and serves as a reliable point of access for all stakeholders seeking to work with the University in activities related to regional policy and development.





Human Resources and Social Development Canada (HRSDC)

Human Resources and Skills Development Canada and Social Development Canada have been merged. Information about both departments will be updated shortly to reflect the creation of the new department.





Newfoundland and Labrador Centre for Health Information (NLCHI)

The Centre for Health Information collaborates with Newfoundland and Labrador's health system to ensure quality health information is available for health care, system-wide planning, research, and policy development. Through this collaboration, the Centre has fostered expertise in health information systems development and management, applied health research, data quality and collection, education, and personal information protection.





Department of Education

The Department of Education is a dynamic organization charged with the responsibility for providing the enabling structures for the education of over 81,000 students in the K-12 system, as well as the post-secondary system. The department also encourages and promotes lifelong learning for all of the citizens of Newfoundland and Labrador.





Department of Municipal and Provincial Affairs (MAPA)

Our Departmental Vision is that the people of Newfoundland and Labrador enjoy healthy, safe and sustainable communities supported by strong local governments.

Our Departmental Mission is to be progressive, adaptable and professional in working with the people of our province to develop strong, self-reliant local governments capable of leadership and serving the best interests of their communities.





Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness Canada (PSEPC)

Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness Canada (PSEPC) is Canada’s lead department for public safety.

We build and implement national policies for emergency management and national security. We help ensure community safety by delivering crime prevention programs and developing federal policies for law enforcement and corrections.





Newfoundland and Labrador's Economics Research and Analysis Division

The Economic Research and Analysis Division is the central point within the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador for commentary on the performance of the provincial economy. The Division conducts economic and technical analysis to assist government in evaluating policy alternatives. The Division also carries out modelling and forecasting through the use of several tools including the Newfoundland and Labrador Econometric Model. Economic and demographic forecasts are prepared for policy and planning purposes.





The Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA)

Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA) is a federal government agency. Headquartered in the Atlantic Region, ACOA's goal is to improve the economy of Atlantic Canadian communities through the successful development of business and job opportunities.





Statistics Canada

Statistics Canada produces statistics that help Canadians better understand their country—its population, resources, economy, society and culture.

In Canada, providing statistics is a federal responsibility. As Canada’s central statistical agency, Statistics Canada is legislated to serve this function for the whole of Canada and each of the provinces.

Objective statistical information is vital to an open and democratic society. It provides a solid foundation for informed decisions by elected representatives, businesses, unions and non-profit organizations, as well as individual Canadians.

In addition to conducting a Census every five years, there are about 350 active surveys on virtually all aspects of Canadian life.

Statistics Canada is committed to protecting the confidentiality of all information entrusted to us and to ensuring that the information we deliver is timely and relevant to Canadians.





Department of Health and Community Services

The Department of Health and Community Services provides a leadership role in health and community services programs and policy development for the Province. This involves working in partnership with a number of key stakeholders including regional boards, community organizations, professional associations, post-secondary educational institutions, unions, consumers and other government departments.





Department of Business

The Department of Business provides leadership and coordination across government departments and Crown agencies to promote business development and good business relations. This includes overseeing the design and coordination of broad business development policies and the coordination of common business-related and marketing activities, particularly at the national and international level.





Women’s Policy Office

The Women’s Policy Office is the lead department responsible for the Violence Prevention Initiative, the Provincial Government's six year, multi-departmental, $9.2 million investment to find long term solutions to the problem of violence against those most at risk in our society. The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador is committed to improving the economic, legal, and social status of women in our province through the work of the Women’s Policy Office in liaison with all other departments.





Nova Scotia's Community Counts

A community embodies a wide range of characteristics. Nova Scotia Community Counts presents socio-economic and other data that illustrate the unique nature of each community. With easily accessible information, Community Counts also allows comparisons of community resources among regional, provincial, and national levels to present a more complete picture of Nova Scotian communities.





Atlantic Summer Institute on Healthy and Safe Communities

The Atlantic Summer Institute is a learning institute that brings people together working in economic and social development, justice, crime, disease and injury prevention, and health promotion. It has been held annually since 2004 at the University of Prince Edward Island in Charlottetown, PEI.

The purpose of the ASI is to make the links between crime prevention, social and economic development and health promotion among the many people and sectors that are working toward creating safer and healthier communities in Atlantic Canada.





Department of Fisheries and Oceans

Fisheries and Oceans Canada is the lead federal government department responsible for developing and implementing policies and programs in support of Canada's economic, ecological and scientific interests in oceans and inland waters.

This mandate includes responsibility for the conservation and sustainable use of Canada's fisheries resources while continuing to provide safe, effective and environmentally sound marine services that are responsive to the needs of Canadians in a global economy.





CBS Enumeration Project

The Town of Conception Bay South and the Newfoundland and Labarador Chief Electoral Office in partnership with the Newfoundland and Labrador Statistics Agency completed an accurate voter's list for the Town of Conception Bay South. In addition, these groups administered a questionnaire to each household to collect demographic and social/economic information.





Community Indicators Victoria

Community Indicators Victoria has been developed to present and report on the wellbeing of Victorians using an integrated set of community wellbeing indicators. These indicators refer to a broad range of measures designed to identify and communicate economic, social, environmental, democratic and cultural trends and outcomes. The aim of Community Indicators Victoria is to build healthy, just and sustainable communities.
